China envoy to pursue consulate office request

JOHOR BARU: Efforts are being made towards the setting up of a Chinese consulate office in Johor, says Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing.

He said there had been requests from the locals since a few years ago, given the economic interests and the significant population of local Chinese in the state.

He, however, noted that such a mission was no small feat as it required extensive study and discussions between the Malaysian and Chinese governments.

“The consulate office has been a hot topic raised by various non-governmental organisations and community leaders throughout my working trip to Johor.

“The state government has also expressed a similar interest.

“It takes a long time to set up such an office in a foreign country as it depends on various factors, including economy and politics,” he said during an engagement session with local Chinese leaders at Southern University College here yesterday.

Ouyang revealed that the Chinese government was aware of Johoreans’ hope for a consulate office but talks and discussions between both countries had been delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“China has 167 embassies and 97 consulate offices worldwide, and there seems to be a need for one in Johor Baru from the economic and socio-development point of view.

“I will continue to pursue the matter through various channels, although it falls under the purview of the foreign ministries of both countries,” he added.

In 2018, Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar proposed for a Chinese mission to be set up to strengthen the relationship between the state and China.

Sultan Ibrahim said the consulate office could also provide value-added services to Chinese nationals working or doing business in the state.

Earlier, Ouyang also visited Foon Yew High School’s main campus in Stulang here where he expressed confidence that the bilateral and economic ties of both nations would be further strengthened.

“Many businesses in China have put Malaysia as their number one investment destination while some also set up their headquarters here as they recognised the country’s potential in terms of geographical location and investment environment,” the Chinese ambassador added.
