Justices of Peace encouraged to become court mediators

KLANG: Encouraging Justices of Peace to become court mediators is one of the agendas in newly-appointed Council of Justices of the Peace of Selangor president Datuk Ng Seing Liong.

“We want Justices of Peace (JPs) to undergo the course in court mediation so that they can play a pivotal role in helping disputing parties to settle their grievances out of court,’’ he said when contacted.

He said besides helping the disputing parties, this will also help counter the backlog of cases in the courts.

Ng, who is an accountant by profession, said he wanted to also enhance the image of the JP Council and make it more accessible to members of the public.

“We plan to turn every JP’s office into a service centre whereby people can just walk in and seek help," explained Ng.

He said the council’s office had been opened up as a service centre, but many were not aware of it and hence the traffic was low.

Hence, there will also be efforts from now onwards to reach out to members of the public.

On another matter, Ng said he hoped Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah will consider appointing more JPs in the state.

“Our numbers are declining and most of us are in our late-60s, 70s and 80.

“We need more JPs in the state,’’ said Ng, who is 68 years old.

In his speech after his appointment on Monday (Aug 8), Ng said amendments were made to the council’s constitution in regards to its membership enrolment during its annual general meeting on July 3.

He added, the amendments which received the nod from all council members, will be sent over to the Registrar of Societies for approval.

“Once this amendment is approved, JP Selangor will only have Lifetime Members with a fee of RM2,000.

“My goal is to invite all Selangor JP members to become JP members for life,’’ he said.

Ng also thanked Sultan Sharafuddin for agreeing to appoint him as the council’s president for a two-year term beginning June 15.

Ng replaced Datuk Loke Fay, whose two-year term had ended.

Meanwhile, the council’s treasurer Datuk Tang See Hang had full confidence in Ng’s leadership.

“We will work as a team to serve the people of Selangor,’’ added Tang, who is a former Selangor executive councillor.
