SERDANG: Visitors to the 2022 Malaysian Agriculture, Horticulture and Agro-tourism Exhibition (Maha 2022) will get to experience rice harvesting through the use of virtual simulation.

Farmers’ Organisation Board (LPP) director (engineering division) Zaipudin Mohamad said the Combine Harvester Simulator, which allows users to gain virtual experience on operating a padi harvesting machine, was one of the many attractions at the event.

“It’s like doing a flight simulation. We have instructors to guide the public on how to operate the machine and the yield will be displayed on the big screen, as if we are in the rice fields harvesting the crop,” he told Bernama recently.

Maha 2022 is held at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) here until Aug 14.

Zaipudin said seven classic machines were also being displayed at the Mini Machinery Museum for visitors to get a closer look at the agricultural equipment used by farmers from 1905 to 1957.

The items include the chisel plough and the Field Marshall tractor (model K4462), which were purchased by the Agriculture Department in 1905 and 1952, respectively, for clearing of virgin forest area and opening of new agricultural sites.

“The chisel plough is operated by using a tractor or a bulldozer to pull it. Its purpose is to remove stones and wood stumps, as well as to break and loosen hard and dry soil before normal ploughing tools are used.

“As for the Field Marshall tractor, it is used for ploughing.

“The machine is manufactured by a UK company, Marshall, Sons & Co of Gainsborough, from 1945 to 1957,” he added.

Zaipudin said a total of 40 exhibitors and 15 government agencies were showcasing their products at the Machinery Site of the expo, which is expected to attract 300,000 visitors.

“In 2018, the Machinery Site recorded a whopping RM1.8mil worth of sales of various agricultural equipment, especially the mini harvester,” he said.

The Machinery Site is one of the eight sections at Maha – the theme for this year is “Food Security for the Future”. Others are the Fisheries Site, Padi Site, Livestock Site, Herb and Vegetable Site, Fruit Site, Pineapple Site and Floriculture Site.
