MACC nabs two more for bribe to obtain quota for foreign workers

PETALING JAYA: A businessman and an employment agency owner were arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly accepting bribes to help employers or agents get quotas for foreign workers.

This comes after eight were nabbed on Wednesday (Aug 3), including a tech company chief executive officer.

According to a source, the two are aged between 30 and 50 and were arrested at 10pm and 12am at the MACC Putrajaya Headquarters.

“The businessman was investigated in relation to receiving bribes amounting to more than RM1mil from an employment agent, while the other is suspected of paying bribes to a company providing a platform for foreign workers' applications,” the source revealed.

Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin has allowed both suspects to be remanded for three days beginning Thursday (Aug 4) until Sunday (Aug 7) after the MACC applied for the remand order at the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court this morning.

On Wednesday, the MACC arrested eight individuals; six were remanded for three days while two suspects, a male and a female, were released on bail after their statements were recorded.

Meanwhile, MACC director of investigations Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hashim confirmed the remand and that the investigation was ongoing, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 16 (a) of the MACC Act 2009.

It was reported that the anti-graft commission raided the company last month.
