Not missing it, says Lam Thye on leaving politics

KUCHING: Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye (pic) has no regrets stepping away from politics 32 years ago to focus on serving the nation through voluntary work and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

"I don't miss politics," the social activist told reporters at a book signing session for his biography "Call Lee Lam Thye: Recalling a Lifetime of Service" here on Tuesday (Aug 2).

He said he saw his service over the last 53 years in two phases, first through politics as an elected representative from 1969 to 1990 and second after his retirement from politics through NGOs.

"Although I have left politics, I have not stopped serving the people and nation.

"Since 1969 until today, I have continued to contribute through NGOs and expressing my views on various issues."

Lee said he hoped the biography would inspire Malaysians to play their part in developing the nation to make it better and more prosperous.

He said politicians were welcome to learn from his experience of serving the people as told in the book, although politics was different during his time.

"Most importantly, I want to motivate the younger generation to be involved in voluntary activities for the good of society and nation," he added.

The biography is available in English and Mandarin, with a Bahasa Malaysia version to be released soon.
