OK to grow veggies to be self-sufficient but do so legally, says Perak MB

IPOH: People who want to grow their own food must do so legally, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

The Perak Mentri Besar said while the state encourages the people to plant crops, it does not mean they can do so anywhere.

"The people need to apply and get confirmation.

"If not, the land owner will take action," he told a press conference after a programme with army veterans at Taman Perpaduan here in conjunction with Warriors Day on Monday (Aug 1).

"One cannot simply just bulldoze a piece of land. They also cannot do it by the side of the roads, as these are road reserves," he said, adding that the Public Works Department would also not approve it.

Earlier in his speech, Saarani had told the veterans to be prepared to face a food shortage crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic and Ukraine-Russia War.

He said the people could no longer rely on imported food and need to plant crops to become self-sufficient.

"If there is no land, use pots for plants like chilli, bitter gourd or tomato," he said.
