KUALA LUMPUR: A last-minute decision to hop on a bus from Johor to Kuala Lumpur to look for a job turned out to be one of the best decisions made by Ahmad Haziq Danial Yusaini.

The 25-year-old engineer from Pengerang was among 400 individuals hired on the spot at the Expo Kerjaya Jamin Kerja Keluarga Malaysia yesterday.

“I read about the job carnival on Instagram and only told my father of my plans to attend at the very last minute.

“I took a bus from Johor on Saturday night and arrived in Kuala Lumpur at about 3am today (yesterday). I slept over at a friend’s house before going to the job carnival.

“I still can’t believe I got a job with a multinational company on the very same day,” a beaming Ahmad said when met after his interview at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL).

He said he came to the carnival to further his career as an engineer.

Another successful applicant was Mohamad Syamil Mohamad Ridzuan, who was thrilled to secure a stable job.

“I was a Grab delivery rider for more than a year and my mother wanted me to get a fixed job.

“She sent me a message about the carnival and asked me to go take a look.

“I can’t believe that I was hired on the spot and will start work this coming Friday,” the 22-year-old from Wangsa Maju said.

Mohamad Syamil said he would start his new career as an interior airplane cleaner in Sepang.

It was also a happy outing for Muhammad Ridzuan Naina from Semenyih.

The 33-year-old, who is deaf and mute, said he had been working for a safety equipment company in Batu Caves for the past six years but wanted a job closer to home.

“I scouted around at the carnival and was hired on the spot by a company from Kajang.

“I am so happy to get the job as it means that I will be working closer to my family,” he said when interviewed with the help of an interpreter.

Muhammad Ridzuan, who is married with a two-year-old child, also said his new job offered a higher salary than his current workplace.

Organised by Socso, the job carnival is being held from July 23 to 27 and will be officially launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob at 3pm today.

Socso’s Office Employment Insurance System head Azirruan Arifin said more than 10,000 young people were expected to register during the five-day carnival, with 1,000 getting hired.

“We are targeting at least 10% of them to be successful in their interviews,” he told reporters when met at the carnival.

He said over 1,000 companies had set up booths, with 400 successful applicants getting jobs on the spot while 1,500 were shortlisted for their second interview.

“This is the largest job carnival we have organised so far and l am told it is also the largest ever held in the country,” added Azirruan.

He said 70% of jobs on offer were for non-executive posts while the rest were for executive positions, with salaries ranging from below RM2,000 to RM5,000 a month.

Azirruan said Socso took a more holistic approach when organising the job carnival.

“We also provide counselling and tips for applicants who are not successful,” he said.

Five motorcycles along with notebook computers are up for grabs as lucky draw prizes for those attending the job carnival.
