Alleged wife and baby killer to undergo mental evaluation

JOHOR BARU: The man who allegedly killed his wife and infant son in Kampung Bakar Batu has been ordered by the Magistrate’s Court here to undergo mental evaluation.

This came following the prosecution’s request after Mohamad Amir Nazri Mohd Adam, 24, was separately charged with murdering Hajar Nursyahirin Rosman, 26, and their two-month-old son Hans Mohamad Thaqeef Mohamad Amir Nazri.

The accused, who was a ship cleaner, is said to have committed the offences at Jalan Dewasa, Kampung Bakar Batu here, at about 11.30am on July 4.

Mohamad Amir Nazri, clad in a grey T-shirt and in handcuffs, nodded and said he understood when the charges were read to him before Magistrate Mohd Zulhilmi Ibrahim yesterday.

Both charges under Section 302 of the Penal Code carry the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutors Muhammad Qaiyyum Ramlan, Muhammad Shafiq Mohd Ghazali and Danial Munir asked for the accused to be sent to Hospital Permai for a mental evaluation.

The court also set Aug 18 for mention and for the submission of the complete forensics, DNA and psychiatric reports.

The murder case made headlines after the suspect was caught on video fleeing from the scene on a motorcycle without any clothes on.

Meanwhile, at a separate courtroom, Amir Hasan Jalani, 34, claimed trial to a charge of driving recklessly leading to an accident involving 11 vehicles on the Causeway.

The lorry driver allegedly committed the offence at about 9.25am on July 7.

He was charged under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a jail term of not more than five years and a fine of RM5,000 to RM15,000, upon conviction.

He could also lose his driving privileges and eligibility to obtain a driver’s licence for at least five years.

Amir Hasan’s employer – represented by one Yap Shee Min – was also charged with allowing the accused to drive the overloaded heavy vehicle at the same place and time, which is an offence under Section 57(1)(b)(vi) of the Land Public Transport Act 2010.

According to the charge, the lorry was loaded with construction materials totalling 91,240kg, which was 122.5% more than the vehicle’s permitted 41,000kg.

Deputy public prosecutor Hayatul Wirdah Mohd Yunus asked the court for a bail of RM10,000 for the accused and RM8,000 for the company.

Magistrate Zuhainie Zull Kafli allowed bail at RM4,000 and RM3,000 respectively, and set Sept 5 for the next mention.

Lawyer Bustaman Menon Abdul Hamid Menon represented the accused and the company.
