Covid-19: Surge in daily cases in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah recorded a surge in new Covid-19 infections in the past 24 hours, with 241 cases detected on Wednesday (July 13).

This is an increase of 36%, or 64 cases, compared to the previous day.

Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the cases in the state capital were back to three digits, with 106 compared to 85 on Tuesday (July 12).

He said Tuaran was now the second district with the highest number of cases at 31 followed by Beaufort (21) and Papar (14).

"Only nine out of 27 districts did not record any new infection," he said in his daily Covid-19 report.

"Districts like Beaufort and Lahad Datu which were free from any new cases have suddenly recorded a high number of infections," he added.

Masidi said the significant rise in infections should serve as a reminder to the people in the state to return to a safer lifestyle by observing all standard operating procedures and advice by the Health Ministry.

"The growing number of Covid-19 cases will trigger a more rapid rate of transmissions to a bigger number of people particularly among close contacts.

"This multiplier effect will cause the daily cases in Sabah to continue rising," he said.

Masidi said there was a 11.23% positivity rate involving the 2,947 test samples taken in the past day.

"This is an indication that the transmission rate is quicker," he said, adding that 237 of the 241 infections on Wednesday were in Category 1 and 2 while two cases were each detected in Category 3 and Category 4.
