KOTA KINABALU: The Election Commission (EC) must review the automatic voter registration for those aged 18 and above for Sabah amid concerns of dubious voters getting into the electoral roll, says Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS).
Its deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Yee Moh Chai said automatic registration should be halted until suspected illegals using fake Malaysian identification cards were removed from the electoral roll.
“The electoral roll is tainted with those using fake documents to register,” he said, referring to the alleged Project IC where foreign migrants received Malay- sian identity cards through fake documentation.
Yee said the EC should brief all Sabah lawmakers on the safeguards and filters used to register only genuine Sabahans as voters.
He said the EC had yet to accept nu- merous requests for a meeting regarding this issue.
“While PBS supports the registration of 18-year-olds as voters, the method should not be automatic in light of the findings of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on the large presence of illegal immigrants holding fake identification cards,” said Dr Yee, who is a former deputy chief minister.
He also said the EC should prove that the electoral roll is clean and free from dubious voters and inform the public of the safeguards.
“We only want genuine Sabahans to be the rightful voters to decide on the future of the state and country,” he said in a statement.
At the recent PBS congress, party president Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili highlighted the 2014 RCI findings on the existence of Project IC, which found that illegal immigrants were issued identity cards to be registered as voters to benefit certain parties under Barisan Nasional.
