PETALING JAYA: The Federation of Livestock Farmers Associations of Malaysia (FLFAM) has called on the government to provide a subsidy of eight sen per chicken egg amid rising costs.
It said the subsidy was to help sustain the egg farming industry and ensure national food security.
“In view of the rising production costs, which include the poultry feed, raw materials, transportation and issues over labour shortage, we request for a subsidy assistance of eight sen per egg,” it said in a statement on Friday (July 8).
The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry had announced the controlled farm price for Grade A chicken eggs at 41sen, Grade B (39sen) and Grade C (37sen), while the ceiling price was fixed at 45sen, 43sen and 41sen respectively.
FLFAM also thanked the Agriculture and Food Industries Ministry for understanding the chicken farmers' plight.
"The government has taken steps to sustain the farming industry with appropriate financial assistance."
It said that the assistance, which was in the form of subsidies, would ensure farms' survival and help them overcome losses brought about by unprecedented global factors that are beyond farmers' control.
On June 30, Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the government had set aside RM370mil in additional subsidies for chicken and eggs in July and August.
