Johor MB testifies in PAC’s army camp project probe

PETALING JAYA: Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi was among those called up by Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) over a land swap deal involving the Defence Ministry.

PAC chairman Wong Kah Woh said Onn was the fourth witness to appear before the committee on Monday on the matter involving a project to develop an army camp in Paloh, Johor, in 2016.

“Datuk Onn was called as investigation, management, procurement and government finance committee chairman Tan Sri Ambrin Buang had revealed to the PAC that he (Onn) was linked to the project to develop the Paloh Camp in Kluang beginning in 2016,” Wong said in a statement yesterday.

He said the proceedings were held in the Kluang District Office and Onn was called up to testify in his capacity as then political secretary to Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein between 2013 and 2018.

“The PAC investigation is on the role he played in the proposed development,” he added.

Wong said based on an earlier testimony by Hishammuddin to the bipartisan PAC in December last year, the proposed camp development was mooted in 2012.

He said the initial plan involved the exchange of about 38ha of the original Kinrara Camp in Selangor and the development of the air force base in Sendayan, Negri Sembilan.

This included the development of an army base in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan, he added.

However, Wong said the plans were changed to the proposed development of the army camp in Paloh.
