Duo get hefty fines for falsely reporting MyKad theft

JOHOR BARU: Two men were given different sentences at the Magistrate's Court here after pleading guilty to the same offence of making a false police report.

Company manager Chin Chen Yee, 44, was sentenced to an RM800 fine with an additional one month's imprisonment upon failure to pay the fine after making the plea in front of Magistrate Nurmadiana Mamat.

Meanwhile, the unemployed R. Kumaraguru, 31, was sentenced to five days' imprisonment and a fine of RM1,000 with an additional three months' imprisonment upon failure to pay the fine in front of Magistrate Mohd Zulhilmi Ibrahim.

According to the charge sheet, Chin claimed that he had been a victim of a snatch theft with his identification card, driving license, ATM card, and RM500 being stolen.

The incident allegedly occurred at 10.45pm on Sunday (July 3) at Jalan Sutera Tanjung 8/2, Taman Sutera Utama, Skudai.

As for Kumaraguru, he claimed that his wallet, which contained his identification card, ATM card and RM180 cash, was snatched from him on Monday (July 4), at 7.30am at Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Skudai.

The act is an offence under Section 182 of the Penal Code for maliciously lodging a report with the intention of getting another person into trouble with the law, which carries a prison term not exceeding six months or a fine of up to RM2,000 or both.

Chin’s case was prosecuted by deputy public prosecutor Sharifah Natasha Syed Ahmad, while Kumaraguru’s case was prosecuted by Muhammad Arif Marzuki Danial Munir.

Chin had posted bail.

Earlier, Johor Baru North OCPD Asst Comm Rupiah Abd Wahid in a statement informed that police investigation revealed that both cases were made up.

"The duo had made the fake police report to avoid being fined for losing their MyKad identification card," she said.

The statement also stated that Chin had lost his MyKad three times before, while Kumaraguru lost his MyKad while he was drunk near a convenience store at Taman Ungku Tun Aminah.
