Inheritance worth RM78bil waiting to be claimed

INHERITANCE worth more than RM78bil is waiting to be claimed by beneficiaries, Malaysia Will and Trust Association president Datuk Chua Meng Min has revealed.

Among the assets, RM8.8bil is in cash, he added.

“Malaysians do not have the habit of writing wills. So far, fewer than 20% of the adults have done so,” he told Sin Chew Daily during a visit to the media company on Thursday.

In the absence of any wills, he said, the inheritance could not be transferred to the beneficiaries swiftly and smoothly.

“As of 2019, RM8.8bil in cash and RM70bil in real property are waiting to be claimed,” he said.

Chua has hoped that the media will cooperate with the association to promote the importance of will-writing.

“This is a new industry and we will organise more talks to educate the public about it,” he said.

> Nanyang Siang Pau reported that a dairy product made in China was found to be contaminated with a type of toxic additive, 14 years after the country’s melamine-laced baby formula scandal.

The pure milk product, manufactured by Xinjiang Maiquer Group, was found to be tainted with propylene glycol, which could potentially harm the kidneys.

The discovery was made during a random inspection by the authorities recently.

Experts said the chemical, which is commonly used in food products, would cause food poisoning if ingested excessively.

Following this, many netizens have turned to the Internet to express their anger and concern over food safety in China.

They want food safety to be viewed as important as the prevention and control of Covid-19 in the country.
