Married couple nabbed in ganja syndicate bust

KEPALA BATAS: A ganja trafficking syndicate was crippled with the arrest of three people including a husband and wife and seizure of 13.52kg of ganja worth more than RM30,000.

North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Radzi Ahmad said the suspects aged 35 to 44 were nabbed during an operation at North and Central Seberang Prai by state Narcotic Criminal Investigation Department on June 29.

"In the first raid at about 10.30am, police arrested a husband and wife aged 44 and 35 while the suspects were resting at their rented house in Sungai Dua and seized eight packs of ganja weighing about 8.6kg worth RM21,680," he said during press conference at North Seberang Prai police headquarters on Friday (July 1).

ACP Mohd Radzi said following the raid, police went to another location at Prai - a car workshop - where they arrested another suspect aged 44 at about 1.30pm, believed to be the mastermind of the syndicate.

He said police also confiscated five packs of ganja weighing about 4.85kg worth RM12,133.

ACP Mohd Radzi said investigation and intelligence found that the syndicate had been active since early 2022 and the ganja was meant for local distribution.

ACP Mohd Radzi said the total confiscated drugs worth RM33,813 can be used by more than 27,000 drug addicts.

"Police also seized jewelleries worth RM14,000 and RM1,000 in cash during the operation," he said, adding that checks conducted found the mastermind of the syndicate has a prior criminal record.

He said the mastermind of the syndicate tested positive for THC whereas the husband and wife were negative.

He said the husband and wife were remanded for six days from June 30 to July 5 while the mastermind was remanded for seven days from June 30 to July 6.
