Top leaders to speak in Sabah Barisan convention in Penampang

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Barisan Nasional convention here on Saturday will likely be the last major event of coalition members before the general election, said state Barisan chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.

Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Najib Razak will be among the top Barisan leaders to address the Sabah Barisan convention in Penampang.

Besides the Barisan chairman and former prime minister, Bung Moktar as well as the other heads of other Barisan component parties from MCA, MIC and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah will also be giving speeches at the event.

Bung Moktar estimated that about 5,000 people would attend the convention which will be held at the International Technology and Commercial Centre. He said this could be the last big gathering before the coming general election.

“Hence, Barisan members, particularly convention participants, must utilise the meeting to discuss relevant issues in order to empower the coalition’s struggles,” he said.

“The members must look carefully at the Barisan plan in preparing for the coming polls,” he said.

Bung Moktar, who is also Sabah Umno chief, urged Barisan members to strengthen the solidarity between the component parties ahead of the general election.

Barisan, he said, had contributed significantly to the formation of the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah-Barisan state government following the snap state election in 2020.

“As we have only four parties within Sabah Barisan, we need each other in order to continue supporting the current government.

“We need to solidify relations within the Barisan leadership so we can unite our machinery at all levels before we go into the election which can be called any time,” he said.

Bung Moktar also spoke of the importance of Barisan continuing to be close to the people‘s hearts so that it would be seen as a brand that prioritises their interest and the country’s wellbeing.

A host of programmes have been lined up for the convention such as a political and economic forum featuring panel members that include former chief minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak and Umno supreme council member Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek, among others.

Najib is scheduled to speak in his capacity as the Barisan advisory board chairman in a segment called Bicara Seorang Negarawan.

Zahid, who is also Umno president, is expected to close the event later that day.
