KUALA LUMPUR: Police here have conducted nearly 600 raids involving drug distribution at nightclubs between 2019 and this month.
City police chief Comm Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim said during that period, a total of 599 raids were conducted, leading to 2,148 arrests.
“In 2019, we conducted 295 raids, arrested 1,268 people and seized 272.6g of drugs.
“The following year, we conducted a total of 187 raids, which led to 527 arrests and the seizure of 514.96g of drugs.
“We held 51 raids last year, which led to 190 arrests and the seizure of 199.26g of drugs,” he told reporters yesterday.
He added that between January and June this year, police had already conducted 55 raids and arrested 160 people.
“We have seized 5.13kg of drugs so far. Our data also shows that during this period, 15 nightclubs where drug activities were found have closed,” he said.
He said this showed that the City Narcotic Crime Investigation Department was continuously taking action to ensure that no nightclubs were being used as drug lairs.
Those with information on such activities can call the City police hotline at 03-2115 9999.
Last week, former inspector-general of police Tan Sri Musa Hassan was quoted as saying that at least 15 nightclubs and entertainment outlets in the Klang Valley were involved in drug dealing.
Musa, who is also Malaysia Community Crime Care Centre president, said a list of these clubs would be submitted to Bukit Aman.
He said drug users these days were made up of working professionals and that stronger enforcement was needed to curb the issue.
