Sibu man fined RM100,000 for transporting contraband booze


SIBU: A 34-year old man has been fined RM100,000 in default six months' jail by a Magistrate's Court here after he pleaded guilty to transporting illicit liquor.

Nornikman Sidek of Kampung Bahagia Jaya was also ordered to pay RM12,600 as Customs duty for the contraband.

He was charged under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967 in court on Tuesday (June 28).

The section provides for a fine of not less than 10 times the value of the goods or RM100,000, whichever is greater, and not more than 20 times the value or RM500,000, whichever is greater; or a jail term of at least six months and not more than five years; or both, upon conviction.

According to the brief facts of the case, at about 12.50pm on July 3, 2019, Customs officers inspected a container which had been brought to the Royal Malaysian Customs Department office here.

Upon checking, they found 2,520 litres of assorted beers valued at RM13,105 inside with unpaid duty amounting to RM12,600.
