JOHOR BARU: A market research will be conducted by the Johor government on 30 cooperatives that have closed down during the Covid-19 pandemic, this year.
Johor youth, sports, entrepreneurs' development, cooperatives and human resources committee chairman Mohd Hairi Mad Shah said the investigation would help shed light on some of the approaches that the government could improve in helping businesses in their recovery period.
He added that the cooperatives involved were mostly homestays and hotels in the tourism sector that have shut down their business from last year until now.
“The market research will detail the reasons why they closed down, their management practices, and the value of their business and its impact on the local economy.
“Currently there are 1,456 cooperatives that are still running in the state,” he said when met by reporters after officiating the Johor Cooperative Day 2022 (HKN) under the Cooperative Societies Commission of Malaysia (SKM) at Plaza Angsana, here on Saturday (June 18).
He added that the state government was also in the final phase of preparing a one-off financial assistance that would be given to the SMEs in the state in line with the country’s move towards Covid-19 endemicity.
“The aid has been previously given to 299 SMEs last year to help them cope with the ongoing pandemic with a total allocation of RM1.5mil.
“The initiative is in the final phase of discussion with the relevant stakeholders and the details will be announced soon by Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
He also shared that a total of RM360,000 in the allocation has also been given to the Johor Entrepreneur Corporation (PUJB) to manage the local entrepreneur development programme.
