SEREMBAN: A 36-year-old sales assistant was sentenced to six years in jail after he pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court here to two charges of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl.
Judge Datin Surita Budin also ordered Shukri Md Yasin to be given six strokes of the cane for his crimes.
For the first charge, the accused had allegedly committed the offence against the victim around 2am on June 19, 2020 at an unnumbered house in Kuala Klawang, Jelebu.
He repeated this at the same house around 3am the following day.
Shukri was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping upon conviction.
The court sentenced the accused to six years in jail and three strokes of the rotan for each offence.
However, the accused was ordered to serve the custodial sentences concurrently.
Earlier, the accused, who was unrepresented, told the court he was remorseful for what he did.
He also asked for a lenient sentence as this was the first time he had run afoul of the law.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Norshazwani Norshazwani Ishak asked the court to impose a sentence that would be commensurate with the crime and be a deterrent to would-be offenders.
