KOTA KINABALU: A Sabah minister has called on the Health Ministry to take immediate steps to rebuild a rural health clinic that was destroyed in a fire.

Sabah Community Development and People’s Wellbeing Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya said this was to ensure the healthcare needs of residents in the interior Sook sub-district and surrounding areas were taken care of following the fire at the Mansiat health clinic.

“I was made to understand that residents are now depending on a mobile clinic as well as a community hall as an alternative facility to obtain health services now.

“As such, I urge the Health Ministry to give the necessary attention over this matter and act immediately to rebuild the Mansiat health clinic,” he said when met during an event in the interior Keningau district on Thursday (June 16).

The 4.30pm fire at the Mansiat health clinic in Jalan Tulid on Tuesday (June 14) destroyed its facilities and an ambulance.

Following the incident, Sabah Health director Datuk Dr Rose Nani Mudin said residents who depended on the clinic will now need to travel to the nearest facility namely the Tulid health clinic some 30km from Sook town.

Shahelmey, who is also in-charge of health related matters in Sabah, said his ministry was continuously striving to improve its services to help local communities in the state.

He urged community leaders to play a role, particularly in updating the latest data on residents in their areas, so that they would not be left out from welfare programmes and assistance.
