GEORGE TOWN: Participants from South-East Asia and beyond are expected to throng the 11th Penang International Halal Expo & Conference (PIHEC 2022) at the SPICE Convention Centre here next month.

The event, which takes place from July 1 to 3, will bring together top manufacturers and buyers across the region from the food and beverage, financial services, fashion, tech and logistics industries from countries like Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia and Spain.

"It's a great time to be receiving visitors from across South-East Asia and other parts of the world as the Covid-19 pandemic is easing," said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow when announcing the event at Komtar on Tuesday (June 7).

"There is much to be discussed about how businesses should readjust and PIHEC 2022 is a timely platform to reconvene and discuss the future of the halal industry and forge greater business partnerships."

State trade, industry and entrepreneur development committee chairman Datuk Abdul Halim Hussain said Penang will witness a congregation of various business communities across South-East Asia and other parts of the world.

He said it is a great occasion to rekindle the business partnership which was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

"We would like to position Penang as the destination of choice for investment – not only for the high-tech industry, but also as an Asean trade and innovation hub, which includes the halal industry.

There will be 161 booths representing various business sectors in the halal industry open to the public for free.

Panel discussions and breakout sessions will focus on sustainable technology in halal, logistics challenges due to high inflation, global food security and halal certification workshops.

Those who wish to attend panel discussions will have to pay RM150.
