Cops rescue two children, mother and grandaunt arrested for suspected abuse

GEORGE TOWN: Two children with bruises and injuries on their body and face were rescued by police from a unit in Rifle Range flats here.

The five-year-old girl and three-year-old boy have been sent to the Penang Hospital for treatment.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said the children's mother, 28, and grandaunt, 52, had been detained to facilitate investigations over the suspected abuse.

He said a police team from the George Town district headquarters moved into the unit at 11.15am after receiving a police report at 8am on Friday (May 27).

"The complainant said he had seen pictures of the two children on social media, believing that they could be abuse victims with injuries on their face.

"The children were having meals at a coffee shop then.

"We will investigate the case under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides for a jail term of up to 10 years or a fine not exceeding RM20,000, or both, if found guilty.

"Those with information can contact the George Town police district headquarters at 04-218 1822 or any nearest police station," he said in a statement.

Penang MCA social movement bureau head Cheah Chin Woon, who was also at the site, said he lodged a police report after learning about the incident from a friend.
