PETALING JAYA: A police sergeant has pleaded not guilty at the Alor Setar Sessions Court on Wednesday (Jan 26) to a charge of receiving a RM2,500 bribe in Baling, Kedah in 2019.
Sinar Harian reported that 35-year-old Mohd Nazuli Mohd Nazari claimed trial after the charge was read to him in front of Judge Harmi Thamri Mohamad.
Mohd Nazuli allegedly committed the offence on Dec 3, 2019, at 4.27pm at the Inspectorate and Legal Unit (UIP) of the Baling health district office.
He allegedly received the bribe as an inducement to discourage him from taking action against the offender for stealing two handphones from a shop in Baling.
If found guilty of the offence under Section 17A of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, Mohd Nazuli faces a jail term of no more than 20 years and a fine no less than five times the amount of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
Deputy public prosecutor Tan Siew Ping requested for the court to set bail at RM10,000 while Mohd Nazuli's lawyer Alif Zulkefli asked the court to reduce the bail.
Alif said that his client was currently the sole breadwinner for his family which consisted of his wife, two children and also his parents.
Judge Harmi Thamri then set the bail at RM8,000 with a surety and set March 7 for the case's next hearing.
