No shame in flipping roti canai

Roti satu: Mohd Asri twirling the roti canai dough at his late father-in-law’s stall in Kampung Dato Sulaiman Menteri. Looking on is his wife, Roselaily.

JOHOR BARU: For over two decades, Mohd Asri Awi worked his way up the ladder of a four-star kitchen hotel here until he commanded a staff of 24 as a sous chef.

But after the hotel announced its permanent closure in August 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 46-year-old had no option but to resort to flipping roti canai at his late father-in-law’s stall in Kampung Dato Sulaiman Menteri to make a living.
