KUCHING: Flight frequency to major destinations in Sarawak has increased to 562 weekly as of yesterday following approval from the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).
Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said with the increase, flight frequency from outside Sarawak to Kuching would be increased to 279 weekly, Miri (127), Sibu (83), Bintulu (59), Limbang (seven) and Mulu (seven).
“Now it is up to the airlines to start operating on the new flight frequency.
“With this increase in flight frequency, SDMC has directed all airlines to resume normal and lower fares,” he said in a statement, Bernama reported.
Lee said the approval was given after SDMC took into consideration various factors that include Sarawak having progressed to Phase Four of the National Recovery Plan, more flight requests due to the Chinese New Year celebration and a lower number of new Covid-19 cases in the state.
Besides being an avenue to promote the state’s tourism industry, the approval has also taken into account that international travellers coming into Sarawak through Peninsular Malaysia would have to be quarantined in Kuala Lumpur, he said.
