SETIU: By 2023, the Veterinary Information Farm near Bari will be the biggest deer breeding centre under the government to be shared with (pawah system) or purchased by breeders in Terengganu.
Terengganu agriculture, food industry, plantation, commodity and rural development committee chairman Dr Azman Ibrahim said currently there are 50 female deer, five male deer and eight calves at the eight-hectare farm.
He said the number of deer would be increased to 250 in the next two years to assist 50 small-scale deer breeders obtain quality breeds that are cheaper than the market price.
“The method has not been finalised yet, whether to sell, use the pawah system or through matching grants. Among the issues faced is the difficulty in obtaining quality males to increase offspring and venison production.
“With this nucleus deer breeding project, we can help breeders get quality breeds continuously,” he told reporters after launching the project here yesterday.
The farm will also be a reference centre for deer breeding, covering good breeding systems, technologies and practices, to help breeders thrive and be on par with commercial cattle breeding.
The nucleus deer breeding project is one of the programmes under the Terengganu State Agricultural Strategic Plan 2019-2023 and first developed in 2020 with a total value of RM725,000.
Dr Azman said the advantage of deer is that they breed quickly, are disease resistant and can fetch a high price of between RM65 and RM85 per kilogramme. – Bernama
