‘Fully vaxxed teens to enjoy same privileges as adults’

PUTRAJAYA: Complete vaccination for adolescents will be stipulated as a condition in all standard operating procedure (SOP) in line with the decision to allow fully vaccinated teenagers to enjoy similar privileges as inoculated adults, says Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob. The Prime Minister said the condition involving those between 12 and 17, as well as the privileges for them would take effect mid-November.

“We are allowing a grace period of three weeks before all these will take effect.

“Within this period, the 80% of adolescents who have already received their first dose will be fully vaccinated by then,” he said in a statement after chairing the Covid-19 pandemic management special committee meeting yesterday.

Ismail Sabri said the meeting had agreed for all privileges to be extended to teenagers who had been fully inoculated.

He said by extending these privileges, the SOP would have to state the full vaccination among adolescents as a condition.

The National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme for adolescents kicked off on Sept 20.

As of Oct 21, the number of teenagers who had received their first dose stood at 2,524,156 or 80.2%.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said Malaysia was among the countries with the fastest adolescent Covid-19 rollout in the world.

Based on the Health Ministry’s data on CovidNow portal, a total of 1,367,216 or 43.4% of adolescents, aged between 12 and 17, had completed their vaccination as of Thursday.

As for the adult population, a total of 22,084,594 people or 94.3% had completed both doses.

A total of 97.3% or 22,792,916 people had received at least one dose of the vaccine.

The Prime Minister also announced that Johor and Terengganu would move to Phase Four of the National Recovery Plan effective Monday.

“The decision was made after reviewing the risk evaluation that was carried out by the Health Ministry and the National Security Council,” he said.
