Khairy not quitting, still supports government

JOHOR BARU: Khairy Jamaluddin has maintained his support for the Perikatan Nasional government and will not resign.

The Science, Technology and Innovation Minister said he had trust issues with Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“Last October, he (Ahmad Zahid) had sent a letter to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong under his name as Umno president, claiming that all Umno MPs have given their support to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to be Prime Minister.

“However, I was not consulted on that matter and was never asked if I had agreed.

“Secondly, when a voice recording was leaked between the party president and Anwar, he denied it at first, but later admitted it.

“So I cannot trust him (Ahmad Zahid),” he told a press conference after visiting a vaccination centre here yesterday.

Khairy said, however, that he would remain loyal to Umno and still a party member.

“We are still with Perikatan for now and will state our stand in Parliament.

“Let me do my work first as this is about the lives of the people.

“We will be able to vote as Umno MPs next month,” he said.

Separately, Bernama reported that Umno supreme council member Datuk Rosni Sohar has resigned as a member of the management board of the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN).

Her resignation was effective on Saturday.

Rosni, who is also Wanita Umno secretary, said in a statement that the decision was in line with the party’s stand to withdraw support for the Perikatan government.

On Friday, Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad quit as Higher Education Minister, the second minister to do so after Energy and Natural Resources Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah.

Others who resigned from their positions were Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Umno supreme council members Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan and Razlan Raffi and Sabah Umno youth chief Abdul Aziz Julkarnain.
