Noraini steps down as Higher Education Minister

PETALING JAYA: Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad (pic) has resigned in line with the call from the Umno president to retract support for the Prime Minister.

Her resignation is the second resignation, after her Umno colleague, Lenggong MP Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, stepped down as Energy and Natural Resources Minister on Tuesday.

The Parit Sulong MP and Wanita Umno chief said based on a decision made by the Umno supreme council on Aug 3, she agreed with the party’s decision to resign from her post as Higher Education Minister.

“As the Wanita Umno chief, I agree to resign from my post with immediate effect as Cabinet minister.

“The party’s decisions will be implemented when Parliament reconvenes.

“I would like to express my gratitude to the Prime Minister for giving me the opportunity to serve as the Higher Education Minister in the government.

“We have tried to do our best in managing the country’s battle against the Covid-19 pandemic, which is affecting human life across the world. I will continue this effort even if I am no longer a Cabinet minister,” she said in a statement yesterday, while thanking everyone in the higher education sector for their assistance.

Noraini was appointed on March 10, 2020 by the Prime Minister.

On Thursday, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had called on Umno ministers and deputy ministers to resign from their post to show their loyalty to the party.
