Masidi: Not the right time for social gatherings in Sabah with sporadic Covid-19 infections on the rise

KOTA KINABALU: Social gatherings should not be held at the moment especially with rising sporadic infections in Sabah, says state minister in charge of Covid-19 matters Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun (pic).

He said such cases had increased from 22% a few days ago to 24% of the overall numbers on Thursday (Aug 5).

Apart from calling off gatherings, he said vaccinations must be conducted on schedule, if not faster.

“The number of new Covid-19 cases on Aug 5 is 1,062, with sporadic cases contributing over 24% (251 cases). Areas like Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Penampang, Tuaran and Sandakan are seeing a high number of these cases,” he said.

Masidi said in Kota Kinabalu, 83 out of the total 239 new cases were sporadic. In Tawau the number was 37 out of 137 new cases, Penampang 27 out of 106, Sandakan 19 out of 62, and Tuaran 27 out of 114.

He said close contacts of patients remained the largest contributing factor to the rise of cases, at 54% and added that from the latest numbers, 967 or 91% either had mild or no symptoms at all.

“We need to step up vaccination for all the eligible people in Sabah as our number of new cases is high,” said Masidi.

As of Wednesday (Aug 4), the state Health Department had given out a total of 967,555 first doses of Covid-19 vaccines and 415,638 second doses of the vaccines.

“We are confident that health officials will be able to administer up to 60,000 doses of vaccines per day provided the supplies continue to arrive as scheduled and there are no hiccups in the delivery process,” added Masidi.

If everything went as planned, he said, Sabah would be able to get 60% of its residents fully inoculated by Sept 21.

State Health Department director Dr Rose Nani Mudin also reminded the public to refrain from holding social gatherings including gotong-royong to stop the spread of Covid-19.

“Apart from that, we can also reduce the rate of transmission by strictly adhering to standard operating procedures,” she said.
