Organisers quizzed over alleged SOP violations

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have recorded statements from those believed to be the organisers after several NGOs lodged a police report against Saturday’s “Keluar dan #Lawan” protest here.

Representatives from the Persatuan Anak Melayu Johor, Gabungan NGO 1 Malaysia, Pertubuhan Sosial dan Minda Prihatin, Dewan Perundingan NGO and Pertubuhan Salam Budi lodged the report at the Dang Wangi police headquarters yesterday morning.

Persatuan Anak Melayu Johor president Najmuddin Mahmood called for action to be taken against the organisers of the protest on Saturday.

“It was an irresponsible act that did not take into account the seriousness of the pandemic,” he said.

Gabungan NGO 1 Malaysia president Nazlee Aziz Yeop alleged that the protest had breached the Covid-19 standard operating procedure.

“Anyone can voice their opinion, but it must be done in a proper manner,” he added.

A total of 11 individuals believed to be the protest organisers had their statements recorded at the police headquarters yesterday.

Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat spokesman Mohammad Asraf Sharafi said their statements were recorded from 10.30am and the process lasted for about two hours.

“We were told that the investigation was based on a violation of the Covid-19 SOP. To us, we adhered to the SOP during the protest by providing double layer face masks, gloves and face shields,” he said.

He said the protest was also monitored by Suhakam, which verified that the protesters had complied with the SOP.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim said police also received a report on the protest at around 3.04pm on Saturday.

“All individuals involved have been identified and they will be called up by Dang Wangi police,” he said in a statement.
