KOTA KINABALU: A police detainee, who is also Covid-19 positive, is still at large after he and three others escaped from the state Native Court Training Institute in Penampang at about 3.30am on Sunday (Aug 1).

Police have asked the public to keep a lookout for Mohd Rahman Basir, 24, but warned them against taking matters into their own hands as he is infected with the virus.

“We need to make sure that no one else is infected,” said Penampang OCPD Deputy Supt Mohd Haris Ibrahim on Monday (Aug 2).

He added that the three other escapees were recaptured at about 5.45pm on Sunday at Taman Wijayah, Menggatal, some 20km from where they escaped.

He urged the public to contact the Penampang police station at 088-723961, or the nearest police station if they have any information on Mohd Rahman’s whereabouts.

This suspect is under investigation for a drug-related offence.

In an unrelated matter, a Covid-19 positive man in Sipitang district was slapped with a RM4,000 fine for breaking quarantine and leaving his home, which is under the enhanced movement control order.

He was wearing a white quarantine wristband and walking around, which caught the attention of enforcement officials at about 11.50am on Sunday.

Sipitang OCPD Deputy Supt Champin Piuh said the 30-year-old man was stopped at a jetty in Kg Guruh-Guruh, Sipitang.

It is learnt that health officials escorted the man home after he was issued the compound notice.
