Customs seize liquor, cigarettes worth more than RM2.5mil

SIBU (Bernama): The Royal Customs Department seized 27 containers of liquor and cigarettes with unpaid taxes from a ship in Sungai Rajang near here on July 20.

Speaking about the seizure, Sarawak Customs director Herman Shah Abdullah said that 369,672 litres of liquor and 16,852,000 cigarette sticks were worth more than RM2.5mil were seized and involved duty payments of RM13,388,684.38.

He said in a statement on Saturday (July 31) that five people - of which four are foreigners - aged between 22 and 50 were detained to facilitate the investigation.

Herman Shah said that the ship entered through the Sungai Rajang estuary and into Sibu waters to lift the containers for distribution in the state, he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(a) and Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act for importing un-customed or prohibited goods and knowingly dealing with un-customed or prohibited goods with intent to defraud the government of duties.- Bernama
