GEORGE TOWN: Over 5,000 seaport industry staff members will receive their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine from next Tuesday (Aug 3), says Penang Port Commission (PPC) chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng.
He said the commission through the Transport Ministry has agreed to coordinate the Transport Sector Industry Vaccination Centre for Penang Port at the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal with the support of the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (Mosti) and Health Ministry.
"We are proud to shoulder the responsibility as the operator of this programme after taking into account the importance of vaccination in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Tan.
"We express the highest appreciation to Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong for taking the initiative to ensure immunisation can be given to frontline personnel in the maritime sector," he added in a statement on Friday (July 30).
He said there are about 5,434 people working at the port comprising staff from PPC, Penang Port Sdn Bhd, sailors, workers in the logistics sector and other communities.
"As many as 200 doses will be dispensed daily and it will take 27 days to complete administering the first dose and dispensing of second doses will start right after all recipients involved complete receiving their first dose,” said Tan.
He added that port personnel have been delivering their services non-stop since the movement control order was first imposed last year to ensure the smooth delivery of essential items to consumers.
"Hence, the Covid-19 vaccination programme is important to ensure that operations at the port can go smoothly and serve as an additional protection to curb the spread of Covid-19 within its premises,” said Tan
"I'm confident that a vaccination programme held for Penang Port, the port community will be more confident in delivering their respective responsibilities and speed up the country's economic recovery," he added.
