Khaled Nordin: Umno should strive to establish interim government

JOHOR BARU: Umno should strive to establish an interim government as a way to rescue the country until the next general election, says party vice-president Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin (pic).

Khaled said that the interim government should only have three mandates; to manage the country's economy, to overcome the health crisis and to prepare the country for the next general election.

"Umno must use this opportunity to provide the leadership that is hoped for the sake of the dire needs of the country. Umno must save Malaysia by working on the establishment of an interim government with only three mandates,” said the former Johor mentri besar.

He added in a statement on Friday (July 30) that the interim government should come to an end once the 15th General Election is held.

Khaled said that Parliament sittings must be continued under the interim government and that the freedom of the media and social media should be guaranteed.

"Government decisions and expenditures must be tabled in Parliament for check-and-balance as well as so that the Constitution can be fully restored," he said.

Khaled added that Prime Minister's Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's statement in response to Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah on the revocation of the Emergency Ordinance makes things more complicated.

"Umno elected representatives only have one choice. That is to support the order of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong with their whole heart and soul,” he said.

"Umno will not and should not be dragged into this conflict. Umno's commitment from the beginning of its establishment, among other things, was to defend the Royal institution,” added Khaled.

Khaled also said that any action that is not in line with that commitment is against the value, stand and struggle of Umno.

He added that Umno representatives need to choose to either be with the King and the people or with the Prime Minister and Perikatan Nasional.

"Leaving Perikatan is better than turning one's back on our national interests in this time of crisis.

Umno cannot abandon the nation for Perikatan," he said.
