ALOR SETAR: Kubang Pasu's branch Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry raided a rice mill and seized 100 bags of packed 5kg rice worth RM1,200 from a rice mill for cheating on weight in Jitra on Tuesday (July 27).
Its enforcement chief Muniandy Kanan said following a report from the public, a six men enforcement team raided the rice mill which was located in the area of Sungai Korok at about 11am.
"Upon weighing a 5kg packed rice, it was found that the pack's weight did not correspond with the weight displayed by the label.
"The ministry and Metrology Department officers found each bag was underweight by 40g per bag," said Muniandy in a statement on Wednesday (July 28).
He said action will be taken on the rice mill under Section 10 of the Consumer Protection Act 1999 Act 599) for misrepresentations of quantity by inaccurate weight.
"If convicted, the offence carries a maximum fine of RM100,000," said Muniandy.
