Prices of greens down since lifting of EMCO in Cameron Highlands

VEGETABLE prices nationwide have fallen after the enhanced MCO was lifted in Tringkap, Cameron Highlands, on July 11, leading to a surge in availability, Sin Chew Daily reported.

According to Chen Jia Lun, a vegetable wholesaler from Tringkap, celery that was once sold at RM9 per kilogramme now sells for between RM2 and RM6.

The price of white radishes had also fallen from RM3.50 to just between RM1 and RM2, he added.

Chen explained that farmers attempted to offload most of their stored-up vegetables immediately after the enhanced MCO was lifted.

He estimated that at least 40% of the vegetables and fruits stored up during the period had been thrown away, especially the more perishable varieties.

He added that he expected prices to return to pre-enhanced MCO levels after two weeks, which is the time farmers will take to harvest the next round of crops.

> The daily also reported that educationist group United Chinese School Committees’ Association (Dong Zong) urged the government to vaccinate students who are taking major examinations this year, as well as teachers, before being allowed to go back to school.

Speaking in response to the Education Ministry’s plan to reopen schools in September, Dong Zong president Tan Tai Kim urged the government to reassess the risk when the time comes.

“We hope that all candidates (of major exams) as well as their teachers can receive both doses of the vaccine before classes resume in September.

“It has to be done latest by August to put everyone’s mind at ease,” he said.

The government announced in June that students sitting for their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia will be inoculated.

> A Chinese influencer, whose story of her having to cart 2,000 bags of cement a day to make a living had propelled her to fame, was found to have concocted the whole thing, reported China Press.

Zhang Fang Fang, 27, better known as the Cement Girl, was recently found to be the owner of a Lamborghini sports car.
