JOHOR BARU: In a tit-for-tat move, a Johor Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) assemblyman warns that the party will withdraw support for Mentri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad if Umno continues to push for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to resign.

Permas assemblyman Datuk Seri Che Zakaria Mohd Salleh (pic) said that he and several other Bersatu assemblymen could also withdraw their support for Hasni and cause the state government to collapse.

“I would like to remind Umno to stop playing politics because if there is a change in the federal level, then there will also be a change in the state,” he said on Monday (July 12).

When asked how many Bersatu assemblymen would withdraw support for Hasni, Che Zakaria said there were a few including himself.

Presently, Bersatu has 12 assemblymen in the 56-seat Johor state assembly.

Che Zakaria urged Umno to stop playing politics, especially now with the country still affected by Covid-19.

"If Umno is really fighting for the rakyat, then they should stop all these political games and focus on solving pressing issues,” he added.

Che Zakaria said Bersatu assemblymen would be watching closely when Parliament reconvenes on July 26.

The state government, which comprises Umno, MIC, PAS and Bersatu, has 29 assemblymen while the Opposition Pakatan Harapan has 27 representatives.

On July 6, state assembly Speaker Suhaizan Kayat reminded all 56 assemblymen to “keep politics out” when the state assembly reconvenes on Aug 12.

He added that the main focus should be battling the pandemic and that both sides should work together to help Johoreans.
