Ministry official remanded in RM1mil graft probe

PUTRAJAYA: An assistant undersecretary of a ministry has been remanded for five days to assist in an investigation into claims that he accepted bribes amounting to RM1mil.

The 46-year-old civil servant is alleged to have received bribes in various forms as a reward for helping 11 companies secure general supplies, transportation and services contracts awarded by his ministry.

The remand order was issued by Magistrate Shah Wira Abdul at a Magistrate's Court here Halim following an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) prosecutor on Wednesday (June 23).

It is learnt that the suspect was arrested at MACC headquarters here at around 9pm on Tuesday (June 22) after having his statement recorded.

Sources said MACC is investigating claims that since 2016, the suspect had received gratification in the form of cash totalling about RM300,000, jewellery, 0.8ha (two acres) of land, a two-storey shoplot and a motorcycle.

The case is being investigated under Section 17 (a) of the MACC Act.
