PETALING JAYA: The government must reconvene Parliament within two weeks, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic).
The Umno president said the party fully supported both the Istana Negara and the Keeper of the Rulers Seal media statements that expressed the views of the Malay Rulers calling for the Parliament to reconvene as soon as possible.
"The failure of the government to carry out those views can be considered as disloyalty and showing disrespect towards the Malay royal institutions," he said in a statement on Monday (June 21).
He added that the Umno Supreme Council will meet soon to decide on its next move.
Ahmad Zahid, who is the Bagan Datuk MP, said that similar to what has been expressed to the King, Umno is of the view that Parliament was important in raising various issues and hopes of the rakyat who are facing difficulties during the Covid-19 pandemic.
He added that it will also ensure accountability in government administrative matters.
On June 16, the King called for the Parliament to be reconvened as soon as possible.
Istana Negara Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said that Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Mustafa Billah Shah conveyed this after looking at all the views presented by the political leaders, the Special Independent Committee on Emergency and experts as well as government agencies.
The Malay Rulers also expressed that there is no need to place the country under Emergency beyond Aug 1.
In a statement issued by the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal, Tan Sri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, the Rulers concurred with the view of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong that Parliament should be reconvened as soon as possible.
