KOTA BARU: A stench coming from the staircase of a building under construction in Jalan Tengku Chik here led to the discovery of a senior citizen's decomposing body on Sunday (June 20).
Kota Baru OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rahim Daud was quoted by Sinar Harian as saying that the police received a tip-off from a man in the area complaining that he had detected the smell of something rotting before stumbling upon the corpse near the staircase.
Police immediately dispatched a team to the location.
The body of the deceased, in his 60s, was found at the scene at about 6pm on Sunday.
"The officers at the scene found the body near the staircase. Based on initial checks, the victim is believed to have been dead for almost a week," ACP Abdul Rahim said.
He added that the case had been classified as sudden death without any criminal element.
"The body has been brought to the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital for post-mortem," he said, adding that police are hoping the victim's relatives would come forward to help identify the body.
