Najib: Extend incentives for homeowners to lower rentals too

PETALING JAYA: The government should extend additional incentives for homeowners so they can lower rentals as well, says Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

He said the special incentives for landlords of buildings and premises of at least 30% for a period of six months was a good initiative introduced by the Perikatan Nasional government under the Pemerkasa Plus stimulus package.

"However, the incentives mostly help real estate and private business owners.

"The same incentives should be given to homeowners to encourage them to lower rentals voluntarily," he said on his Facebook page on Monday (June 21).

Under the government's latest Pemerkasa Plus stimulus package, landlords of private premises who reduce their rental rates by at least 30% from April to June this year qualify for additional tax deductions.

"In some countries including the United States, temporary laws have been put in place to avoid landlords evicting tenants who cannot afford to pay rental during the lockdown period," said the Pekan MP.

Najib said such a move should also be implemented in Malaysia during the current lockdown.
