Melaka cops arrest three over illegal football betting website


MELAKA: Three local businessmen have been arrested for allegedly operating an illegal gambling website linked to the ongoing Euro 2020 football tournament.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Afzanizar Ahmad said his men raided three premises in Taman Sutera at Batu Berendam, Jalan Tun Sri Lanang and Kampung Lapan here on June 18 and 19.

The suspects, aged 33 to 47, had been running gambling activities since the tournament started and have since been remanded, he said on Monday (June 21).

ACP Afzanizar said digital devices and telecommunications equipment were also seized during the raids.

He said all three could be charged under Section 6(3) of the Betting Act 1953 once the investigation has been concluded.

ACP Afzanizar also advised the public to refrain from making Illegal bets as police would now focus on bookies, punters and those providing a base for syndicates to carry out their activities.

Matches for Euro 2020 will take place until July 11.
