PETALING JAYA: The 15th PKR Congress began on Sunday (June 20) and was held virtually for the first time in the party's 22-year history.
In his address, PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim noted the ongoing pandemic Covid-19 had forced the party to hold the congress virtually
He reminded delegates that the pandemic had resulted in restrictions which could be overcome with the use of the latest technology to continue the struggle for good governance.
"What we need are systemic changes as some say we are still relying on the same slogans used more than 20 years ago," Anwar said in his speech.
He blamed the mistake by the government in ensuring sufficient Covid-19 vaccine supply as the biggest failure resulting in the recent high number of cases and deaths.
He noted that even the Malay Rulers were recently forced to voice the worries of the rakyat at the handling of the pandemic by the government.
Earlier, in his welcoming address, party secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail reminded delegates that they should play the role of "problem solvers" as the party gears up to face the coming general election.
The congress saw 2,400 PKR delegates and leaders participating through the Zoom application from their respective homes.
The change to the format of the PKR congress was made following the start of the two-week lockdown on June 1.
