Joyriding teenager and pals busted after high-speed pursuit

MELAKA: A Form Three student who took his uncle's four-wheel drive for a joyride has ended up in police custody after a 15km high-speed chase.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Afzanizar Ahmad said they detained the 15-year-old along with two of his friends, aged 15 and 16, after they sped away from a roadblock at Bukit Baru here at about 6.30pm on Saturday (June 12).

“The teenager was driving recklessly when police spotted him making a U-turn as he approached the roadblock, before a high-speed chase ensued,” he said on Monday (June 14).

ACP Afzanizar said his men spotted the trio in the four-wheel drive approaching the roadblock.

He said the police car signalled the driver to stop but he kept on driving in a dangerous manner until he was intercepted.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the teenager had taken his uncle’s vehicle without permission for a joyride.

“All three teenagers are now under remand and being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant, and Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.

ACP Afzanizar said all three were also issued compound notices of RM3,000 each for violating standard operating procedures during lockdown.

He added that the owner of the vehicle would also be issued a compound notice.

Separately, ACP Afzanizar said police smashed a robbery gang known as “Bhai Gang'' who targeted construction sites with the arrest of its 42-year-old mastermind and his four accomplices, including his 22-year-old girlfriend.

He said the gang targeted construction sites which were left unattended during the movement control order and was responsible for theft of materials worth RM500,000.
