KOTA TINGGI: It was a “chicken and egg situation” at a village near Pengerang here with villagers coaxed into getting the Covid-19 vaccination after being offered both items for free.
And dangling the chicken and eggs worked, with 185 villagers of Kampung Tanjung Buai getting vaccinated.
Penawar assemblywoman Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain said the day before the “Jom Vaksin” programme on Sunday, she accompanied the village committee to about 40 houses to encourage the villagers to get vaccinated.
She said many were hesitant as they were afraid of the needle.
“I told them that if they agreed, I will present them with chicken and eggs. I convinced them that it will not take long and the jabs were not painful. In the end, we had a good turnout, ” she said yesterday.
Sharifah Azizah said her service centre also provided mineral water and biscuits to the villagers while they waited to get their vaccination from 9am, adding that the programme was completed by 2.30pm.
She said the village was chosen for the programme with the assistance of the Health Ministry.
“Under the programme, we vaccinated about 98% of the villagers who are mostly senior citizens, ” she added.
Sharifah Azizah said she was hopeful that the programme would be extended to other villages.
“I will continue to assist in getting more people vaccinated to move closer to the government’s herd immunity target. I do hope that the ministry will extend the programme as vaccines must be sent to the rural areas, ” she added.
