Speaker should state his opinion if Parliament should reconvene, says Anwar

PORT DICKSON: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun should openly state his opinion if Parliament should reconvene, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

"As a credible and independent Speaker, you should state your opinion. You do not have to say that this can only be done if there is a directive from the government," the Opposition leader said.

Azhar had said in an interview with Utusan Malaysia that Parliament can reconvene if there was a directive from the government.

In an open letter on Thursday (May 27), Azhar's deputy Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said had called on the government to reconvene Parliament.

The Pengerang MP said this could be done under strict standard operating procedures which include having all Parliament employees, MPs and Senators vaccinated.

Azalina also suggested that to minimise unwanted drama in Parliament, an ordinance could be issued for Parliament to reconvene without motions of confidence to be heard.

On a separate matter, Anwar also said the Government should have announced a moratorium on bank loans after it decided to impose a two-week national lockdown.

The Port Dickson MP said it should also have announced assistance for families affected by the lockdown, which begins on Tuesday (June 1) for a two-week period.

"I just read two days ago that banks have been making huge profits but why isn't there any announcement?" he asked after visiting the vaccination centre in Telok Kemang near here on Monday (May 31).

Anwar said the people should be given assistance during a lockdown as they were unable to work.
