Search on for university student feared drowned near Hutan Melintang

IPOH: A university student is feared to have drowned after being swept away by strong river currents near Kampung Tebing Rabak in Hutan Melintang.

Hilir Perak OCPD Asst Comm Ahmad Adnan Basri said the 21-year-old was swept away after rescuing his 15-year-old brother from drowning on Tuesday (May 25) at about 5.30pm.

"They were playing at Sungai Perak when a strong current swept the younger boy away. The elder brother tried to save him and managed to push him out of the water before he was swept away," he said.

ACP Ahmad Adnan added that the student's younger brother was rescued by some villagers in a boat that happened to be nearby and said that a search-and-rescue operation was held at about 6pm to locate the victim.

"We had to stop at 9pm as the sky was getting dark and resumed our operations on Wednesday (May 26) at 7am," he said, adding that the search is still ongoing.
