KUALA LUMPUR: A syndicate stealing vehicle exhaust systems was busted with the arrest of eight men in the Klang Valley.
Police also seized various car parts, including exhausts, worth some RM119,310.
Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Anuar Omar said they initially arrested six men aged between 22 and 33 in Taman Desa between noon and 3pm on May 21.
“Two of those arrested had prior criminal records, including for drug-related offences.
“We also seized various items including a lorry used for the thefts, car keys and six electric saws, ” he told reporters at the Brickfields police headquarters yesterday.
Further investigations led police to two other men in Batu Caves and Klang, he added.
“We seized some 30 car exhausts and a Toyota Hilux in Klang. We discovered the syndicate would steal the exhaust system and export it to Japan and Germany, ” he said.
A valuable part of a vehicle’s exhaust system is the catalytic converter, which is located between the engine and the muffler, usually on the passenger side.
A catalytic converter contains precious metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium, which can be extracted from used converters.
Experienced thieves can reach under the car and cut off the catalytic converter or the entire exhaust system with a powered saw.
